Flat Frog
by Melanie Haupt

Flat frog, your life has ended
in the middle of my street
no more will your chirrup
serenade us when it rains.

Flat frog, I wonder what
was on the other side
that was so important
to make you take that leap.

Flat frog, do you know you're dead?
Did you kiss your mom goodbye?
Or was it a sudden squish
and now your wee tadpoles cry...

Flat frog, I often wonder
if in the cosmos
there's a huge Ford Taurus
with my name stencilled on its tires' tread.

Flat frog, do you miss us,
Or was it suicide?
Did you have too much to drink,
Or did you just want to die?

Flat frog, did you reflect
before you came to pass?
Or were you just tired
of sitting on your big green ass?
