"wisdom of the ages"
by Melanie Haupt

'i've discovered that there are certain
immutable truths in this life,' she said
as she sipped her frothy coffee drink,
'the few constants in a world of flux.
but there's only one thing that you may not
discover on your own, so i will pass it on to
you'

she leaned forward, the pearl of wisdom
disguised as steamed milk clinging to her
upper lip.

'khaki goes with everything.'

'i can see that you're puzzled,' she smiled,
'but look at it this way...
jobs and lovers will come and go,
and you'll probably own a car or four,
but a good, sturdy pair of khakis
will never let you down.'

'remember what you've learned here today,'
quoth the sage,
'and you will go far. trust me.'
