H²0
with a little help from the telephone
by Tanya Merrill

I sometimes feel I know the waters of people's senses
long before I dive into them
propelling myself through their thoughts
with a smile, a syllable
a wave of the hand--
I know how I should lean my shoulders,
how the arch in my back should vary
with what I say, and how to respond with the
fluid movements of my eyebrows to key words.
I know when to open my mouth to speak
when to exhale, inhale
and knowing the feel of the right moment
to erupt
through the clear surface
or when to fake my
own
drowning.
